[Top 10] Albums that defined pop music in the 2010’s
The 2010’s have seen a revival of creativity in pop and in the general public R’n’B, bringing together, artists from the independent scene and those from the more “mainstream” scene, with a huge fanbase.
Some R'n'B singers (Beyoncé, Rihanna...) impressed the music industry by releasing the best albums of their career - and some of the best albums of the decade, all artists included - notably by surrounding themselves with renowned producers. In the wake of Lady Gaga's The Fame Monster (released at the end of 2009), pop, in its proper sense, has also been marked by monuments.
SongTrivia offers you a Top 10 must-have albums of this decade, to play on your sound system for quality pop musical quiz nights... Music lovers as well as neophytes should be satisfied!
- Lana Del Rey - Norman Fucking Rockwell! (2019)
Born To Die had already caused a sensation in 2012, notably with the hit "Video Games". But it is really with her latest record, Norman Fucking Rockwell! that the singer reached her artistic peak. It was mentioned many times in the tops of the best albums of the decade. "Venice Bitch" and "Mariners Apartment Complex" are some of her best work.
- Ariana Grande – Sweetener (2018)
The pop diva surprised everyone with this album, adored by both the public and critics. She delivers her most "personal" record by talking about love, feminism and her trauma following the attack in Manchester, in May 2017, during one of her concerts. She pays tribute to the victims with 40 seconds of silence at the end of the record.
- Lorde – Melodrama (2017)
Lorde's second album confirmed the singer's talent, already noticed on Pure Heroine. The songs are both introspective and delivered with strength and dynamism. The revitalising single "Green Light" is a good example of all of that. Nothing better for an energetic pop music quiz!
- Grimes – Art Angels (2015)
Claire Boucher, also known as Grimes, had already delivered an excellent electronic pop album in 2012 with Visions. She has now turned her focus on a wider pop audience with Arts Angels, with efficient melodies and perfectionist instrumentations.
- Taylor Swift – Red (2012)
The country pop singer wasn’t always fully appreciated at the beginning, but since then she is considered as an inspiration by many artists, such as Grimes. Red's influence, in particular, has been recognised over the years.
- Christine and The Queens – Chris (2018)
French women also have their spot in our musical quizzes! With Chris, Héloïse Letissier met her fame and imposed herself in the industry with such an international success. Embodying a "gender fluid" approach to the new androgynous character Chris, the singer delivered some interesting tracks, such as the funky Damn, dis-moi.
- Robyn – Body Talk (2010)
The seventh album of the Swedish dance pop singer has been acclaimed by all. Her single "Dancing On My Own" is frequently quoted as one of the best songs of the decade.
- Charli XCX – Pop 2 (2017)
Pop star Charli XCX became famous with the singles "Boom Clap" and "Breaking The Rules" but since her style evolved a lot. In particular, she has worked with the experimental pop label PC Music. This led to the release of Pop 2, a crazy futuristic record stuck on everyone's mind.
- Carly Rae Jepsen – Emotion (2015)
Carly Rae Jepsen is known by the general public for her international hit "Call Me Maybe", but the singer continued to produce a few memorable songs afterwards. Her third album was particularly worthy of our attention. It was composed with the help of the brilliant producer named: Blood Orange.
- Billie Eilish – WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? (2019)
No need to introduce her, the new star from the United States has achieved the impossible with her first album last year: To be number 1 in the charts at only 17 years old! In addition to its commercial success, this gothic pop record is of high quality and impressively mature.
